Jazz Festival Background

This nostalgic annual jazz festival once graced Oamaru's Brydone Hotel every Labour Weekend in the 1980s. This beloved event attracted jazz musicians from all corners of New Zealand, creating a lively atmosphere filled with, camaraderie, and shared creativity. It's a time when like-minded individuals came together to showcase their talents and connect with enthusiastic audiences, making memories that resonate to this day.

In 2012, a passionate group of jazz musicians reached out to the community, igniting the idea of reviving our beloved jazz festival. Here, Jazz and Blues takes center stage, with musicians coming together to create a spontaneous and unforgettable weekend jam. Once again embracing the rhythm and soul of this vibrant music scene.

Oamaru and its Victorian Precinct are the perfect backdrop for a vibrant weekend festival, boasting a variety of exceptional venues. From the historic Criterion Hotel to the Harbour Street Collective Cafe; each location adds its unique charm to the atmosphere. The Penguin Club, Star & Garter Restaurant, Brydone Hotel, Loan and Mercantile Function Centre, and Scotts Brewery will all come together to create an exciting and diverse setting for a weekend filled with captivating jazz performances.

With a huge and talented line up playing each year it makes this event destined to be spectacular.

Relive the magic of those unforgettable weekends and the spirit of jazz that brings us all together.
