​New Zealand's Steampunk scene presents a distinctive identity renowned globally for its inventive spirit and Kiwi DIY attitude. From fashion and accessories to transportation; numerous Kiwi "Steampunkers" take pride in handcrafting their creations. This artistic talent goes beyond just wearable items, with structural art made from recycled materials being a defining feature of the New Zealand Steampunk community. ​The Steampunk NZ Festival began in 2009 with the League of Victorian Imagineers' exhibition, ‘Tomorrow As It Used To Be,' at Oamaru’s Forrester Gallery. Inspired by the creativity showcased, a ball and fashion show were introduced the following year.
From these humble beginnings, Oamaru was named the 'Steampunk Capital of the World" by the Gaurdian in 2016 and the festival has grown into an annual three-day celebration filled with events, workshops, and activities for locals, tourists, and Steampunk enthusiasts alike.
